Sunday 3rd August
In the morning when I wanted to make myself a breakfast I realised that there is absolutely nothing in the kitchen. No pots, no glasses, no cutlery, simply nothing. I only found an aluminium pot, in which I started to boil water for tea. Unfurtunately this only piece of dishes is a little "cribriform", which I hadn't found before the half of the tea was spilled all over the cooker. I poured the rest of tea into the bottle of coke. I had rolls with jam for breakfast. I must go and buy at least a little pot and a plate...
At about 11:30 me, Chang and Artur went to tour the city for the first time. The underground took us to the S.Sebastiao station. There is a large shopping center called "El Corte Ingles" which might be useful. The walk through Park Eduardo VII is nice, it is the largest park in Lisbon. The lower end of the park is formed by Praca Marquez de Pombal, the square with Marquez Pombal's (the guy who enhanced the devolopment of Lisbon in the second half of the 18th century, but a very cruel man at the same time) statue placed on a high column . From there we started to look for an internet cafe, but because it was Sunday it was closed. Then we got to Museo da Ciencia (scientific museum popular mostly among school kids) - also closed but with a botanic garden inside. Investing 60 cents for entry fee turned out to be a good choice. The garden is beautiful, with palms, bamboo, little water pools etc., and it is also a quite place. Sitting on a bench I ate cucumber and bread. After leaving the garden I left Chang and Artur and continued via Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara to Rossio. I saw Elevador (da Gloria) for the first time near Miradoura Alcantara. It is something like a tram with cable in a steep hill. At Rossio I was offered hash for the first time, not knowing that it is a local habit and that I would be offered it million times. At first I didn't know what was happening, but because the guy looked very strange and was acting like having something top secret, I only replied "No,no,no..." with a look of complete idiot who has no idea what's going on.
Next journey: Praca da Figueira - Praca dos Restauradores - Metro Avenida - Metro S.Sebastiao - and to the top of the Parque Eduardo again. There is (except wonderfull view) the municipal prison. It must have been time of visiting hours because there was a long queue of criminal-like looking people, probably going to see their buddys doing time. Then again through the park to Marquez de Pombal - Metro Entrecampos - Modelo shopping (2,57 euro) and home. The key to the main door "works" like you have to make irregular movements in all directions for about 10 mins and wait for the moment when, out of a sudden, the door mysteriously opens.
Now who have we got here: Me, Artur, Chang, Apostolos, Radim, Peter, Roman, Katka, Antonella, Gabriella, Elisa, Blanca, Marta, Mariane, Pavel and Agnieszka.
It is surprising how soon I got used to local habit that the red on traffic lights doesn't mean "Stop!", but it is more something like "Be careful, look well, but continue walking".
